Hess strikes oil in Ghana offshore fields

June 9, 2011

Hess Corporation, US based independent oil and gas company, has announced that it has found significant oil and gas at its Paradise-1 exploration well offshore Ghana and the oil and natural gas condensate they have found is one-third thicker than previous estimates.

Hess operates the well in the Deepwater Tano / Cape Three Points area and owns 90 percent stakes with Ghana National Petroleum Corp., the state-owned oil company, owns the remainder.

The company says the well was drilled to a total depth of 16,436 feet in a water depth of 6,038 feet.

In April, Hess had announced the discovery of 370 feet of hydrocarbons in two separate intervals at the Paradise prospect offshore Ghana.

It’s the second discovery off Ghana this week as Kosmos Energy Ltd., based in Dallas, reported an oil deposit 3 meters thick in its Banda exploration well in the adjacent West Cape Three Points lease.

Ghana’s Jubilee oil field is the largest oil field to be discovered in West Africa in recent times.
